A season ends

Today is the eve of Maha Shivaratri. Tomorrow, the more hardy believers will fast all day and and sing bhajans all night. I like Shivratri for rasayana: sliced bananas, cut grapes, pomegranate, all tossed with grated jaggery and grated coconut; it is rested awhile for sap to bleed and mix and then served. It is a simple dish; Shiva is god as ascetic.
The season passes on the night of Shivratri. Summer begins.
Right now, yellow flowers are in bloom on trees everywhere. Some trees have lost all leaves and are heavily laden with those yellow flowers. Near home, a whole avenue is lit with them. In the morning, the flowers turn translucent and lock sunlight within, and they blush so deep and bright with their guest in them, they are blinding.
